Eid Mubarak: The Only Thing Foaming This Eid Should Be the Coffee, Not the Turbine Oil
Eid Mubarak to all our colleagues, customers, engineers, operators, maintenance teams, reliability warriors, and everyone who knows that a turbine does not care whether it is a holiday, weekend, night shift, or Eid lunch time.
As Eid al-Adha arrives, many of us are preparing for family gatherings, peaceful moments, good food, and a little well-deserved rest. But somewhere in the plant, a turbine oil reservoir is quietly saying: “Relax? Interesting concept. Have you checked my particle count?”
Because turbine oil has no calendar. It does not understand Eid holidays. It only understands oxidation, contamination, thermal stress, water ingress, varnish potential, additive depletion, and that one mysterious alarm that always appears exactly when the maintenance team is wearing their Eid clothes.
During Eid periods, plants can face unusual operating conditions. Some units may reduce load, some may cycle, some may operate with fewer people on site, and some may restart after temporary shutdowns. These changes can turn turbine oil into a very sensitive guest. And unlike your Eid visitors, turbine oil will not politely say, “Everything is fine.” It will express its feelings through servo valve sticking, bearing temperature deviation, foaming, poor demulsibility, rising TAN, increased MPC values, depleted antioxidants, and particles that appear like they were invited by mistake.
That is why this Eid, our message is simple:
Enjoy the holiday. Let the oil chemistry management do the worrying.
Turbine oil problems usually do not begin dramatically. They begin quietly. A little oxygen here. A little heat there. A small amount of water from condensation. Some fine particles passing through. A slightly tired antioxidant package. Then suddenly, your clean-looking oil starts behaving like it has joined a chemistry rebellion.
One of the most common enemies is varnish. Varnish is the sticky, polar, oxidation-derived material that likes to deposit on servo valves, bearings, coolers, and control components. It begins as soluble degradation products in the oil, but when the oil’s solvency limit is exceeded, those products come out of solution and deposit on critical surfaces. In simple Eid language: varnish is the guest who arrives quietly, sits everywhere, blocks everything, and refuses to leave.
Then we have water contamination, the master of bad timing. Water can enter through breathers, seals, coolers, condensation, or poor storage practices. Even small water levels can accelerate oxidation, reduce bearing film strength, promote corrosion, disturb additive performance, and make the oil look cloudy. This is why Karl Fischer water testing is not just a laboratory luxury; it is a reliability necessity.
Particles are another classic Eid-time troublemaker. Hard particles can increase wear, damage journal bearings, interfere with hydraulic control systems, and shorten component life. When particle counts rise above the required ISO 4406 cleanliness level, the oil may still look fine to the eye, but microscopically it is hosting a full mechanical festival.
And then there is foam and air entrainment. The only foam we want during Eid should be in Arabic coffee, tea, or maybe dessert cream. Foam in turbine oil can reduce lubrication efficiency, cause pump cavitation, disturb hydraulic response, increase oxidation, and make the reservoir look like it is celebrating too aggressively.
So how do we relax during Eid while the turbines keep spinning?
By trusting data, not panic.
A proper turbine oil reliability program should monitor the real chemical and physical condition of the lubricant. That means checking parameters such as viscosity, TAN, FTIR oxidation, water by Karl Fischer, particle count, MPC varnish potential, RULER antioxidant levels, demulsibility, foam tendency, air release, and membrane patch observations. Each parameter tells part of the story. TAN tells you about acidic degradation, but often it speaks late. RULER tells you whether your antioxidants are still alive or already retired. MPC gives you early warning of varnish potential. Particle count tells you whether your system cleanliness is under control. Water testing tells you whether the oil is dry enough to behave.
In other words, turbine oil analysis is not just “send sample, receive PDF, ignore PDF.” It is a condition-monitoring strategy. It is the difference between celebrating Eid peacefully and receiving a call that says, “We have a servo issue.”
The best approach before and during Eid is simple: sample early, review trends, control contamination, and keep the oil chemistry stable. Use offline filtration or kidney-loop systems where needed. Maintain proper breathers. Watch reservoir temperatures. Confirm water removal systems are working. Track varnish potential before control valves start acting like they have holiday mood swings. Do not wait until the oil becomes dark, sticky, wet, foamy, or dramatic.
Most importantly, do not make emotional oil decisions. Eid is emotional. Turbine oil maintenance should not be. Do not replace oil just because it looks slightly darker. Do not ignore oil just because it looks clean. Do not blame the oil when the root cause is contamination, overheating, wrong top-up, poor filtration, or additive incompatibility. Let the laboratory data, operating history, and reliability expertise guide the decision.

Clean, dry, chemically stable turbine oil means better reliability, smoother control response, lower varnish risk, improved bearing protection, and fewer unexpected surprises during holiday periods.
So this Eid al-Adha, may your families be happy, your gatherings be peaceful, your food be delicious, your alarms be silent, and your turbine oil remain clean, dry, stable, and completely uninterested in causing drama.
May your antioxidants stay active.
May your MPC stay low.
May your ISO cleanliness code stay within target.
May your water content stay under control.
May your servo valves move freely.
May your bearings run smoothly.
And may the only sacrifice this Eid be the traditional one — not your turbine reliability.
